Mamie's Adventures: Wed. May 18...Day 2

Day 2

We were all so tired last night that we didn’t even wake up until almost 8:00 this morning. Emily slept from 7:45 last night until 9:15 this morning. And that was even with us moving around. They delivered our breakfast to our room. After eating and getting around we decided to see what we could see.

We went up to the 3rd deck level which is two decks above ours. It is called the Lower Promenade Deck. This is where we had to go for the lifeboat safety drill the other day. It is the one deck where there is a walkway all the way around the ship. 3.5 times around equals one mile. There were many people walking. Since we are kind of s-l-o-w walking we had to « pull over » to the side to let people go around us. The water is a very unusual color blue and when the sun hits it there are glints of a different color blue on it. There is a kind of glow to the water. It is beautiful. Unfortunately the camera just doesn’t pick up what we are seeing.

After our morning « constitutional » we sat on the Lido deck (8th deck) and enjoyed the sun. We had our books with us. But I’m not sure how much we read. It seems like, right now, all we want to do is sleep. But who cares? We’re on vacation!!!!

Emily is wearing the « sea bands » We figured out that on the boat she is like how she is in the car. We think it is a form of motion sickness. She wore the bands all day yesterday and never went to sleep.

After working so hard all morning, it was lunch time. We went to the dining room. This time they put us at a table that seats eight people. Three ladies were seated with us. They were very nice interesting people. The older lady, (82) had worked in the Grand Rapids Public Schools until 1976. Now she and her daughter, who is a professor of economics at a university in Florida, live in Florida. The other lady was from California and is an accountant. The three met on another cruise and have been friends since then. Mike was able to share the Gospel with them as they asked questions about the differences between what we believe and what they believe. We sat and talked until they « kicked » us out of the dining room.

After lunch we went for another walk around the Lower Promenade deck and then sat and read and enjoyed the sun. The weather has been beautiful and the captain announced just before lunch that tomorrow is supposed to be the same, although a little bit cooler. 71° instead of the 75° today.

Supper was a formal night. Everyone is to dress up. The men are to wear a coat and tie or a tuxedo and the women a fancy dress. We got all dressed up and went to dinner.

Emily was very pretty.

Most of the stewards are from the Malasian islands. They are always smiling and they learn your name and don’t forget it.

Mike and I took Emily back to the room for her « alone » time and we went walking around the ship to explore some unexplored territory. For a ship on the smaller side there sure is a lot here. Like this very unusual clock tower. It has clocks on every side of it and it is big. It goes from deck 3 to deck 6.

We sat there until the Captain’s Welcome Toast. The captain came out, offered everyone champagne. (We had diet coke and water.) And then he introduced the governing crew of the ship to us. It was very interesting to hear the details of the ship and see the faces of the voices that we had been hearing over the loud speaker.

We stayed for the performance afterwards. It was the « Black Tie » from Australia. Two couples who sing and play the piano and cello, cabaret style. It was very good.

When we got back to the room a « critter » was waiting for us on Emily’s bed.
